The Census

Why a census? Luke’s gospel records that the entire Roman Empire required a census. This Roman Empire at that time included Italy, Greece, Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Asia Minor, and the Near East according to christianity.com. There was no place that Rome didn’t rule. Much has changed today yet there are still some commonalities. The census was issued to get a better account of who should be paying taxes. I find it interesting that the government was so concerned about the possibility of losing someone’s taxes. What intrigues me is how amid the government seeking more money the birth of Jesus Christ happens. Often life goes on in our world even when there is much change going on around us. I guess the good news here is that Jesus came into our world to bring hope, deliverance, and a future that has nothing to do with money or who has the most. Jesus’s message was one of hope for the lost and forgiveness of sins for the sinner. I know some of you may be thinking Jesus talked quite a bit about money and you are correct. However, that all falls under discipleship. There were many things that Jesus taught that the believers were required to follow but all of those took place after the main purpose of his coming and that was bringing life and forgiveness to his creation. I hope you realize that it’s not all about money this Christmas season. The most precious gift that was ever given and is still the most precious gift is life through Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for every one of us. May his blessings be your encouragement this Christmas season. Merry Christmas. Hope to see you soon.

Blessings my friends,
Pastor Steve
