Defending The Faith – Apologetics Part 1
Apologetics is the branch of theology that deals with defending the faith. The term derives its name from the Greek word “apologia” which means to reason or argue with justification. Apologetics is aimed at clearing up misunderstandings or objections to the Christian faith. Apologetics dates back to the early church. Early Christian apologists such as Justin Martyr, Tertullian, and Origin wrote extensively to defend the faith against misconceptions. During the Middle Ages, scholars like Thomas Aquinas further developed apologetic arguments integrating philosophy with theology. Objectives of apologetics are to:
1. Defend the faith by responding to criticism and objections.
2. Create a positive presentation compellingly articulating the truths of Christianity and evangelize using apologetics as a tool to share the gospel with non-believers.
3. Strengthening believers, equipping Christians with knowledge to bolster their faith.
4. Finally, apologetics seeks to strengthen the believers' witness in a world of objections and uncertainties.
We can’t turn our backs on Apologetics, rather we must embrace the truths of God’s Word. 1 Peter 3:15 says: “But in your hearts Revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (NIV) Blessings friends.
