“Happiness is a Choice”
Happiness is a choice each of us can make. Although it can be tough at times, I have found it works best
when I rely on God's strength. While we cannot always choose our circumstances, the Bible teaches that
we can choose how to respond. Happiness based on circumstances may come and go, but the joy that
comes from trusting God can endure even in difficult times. Choosing to pursue joy, gratitude, and hope is
a daily decision rooted in faith. Here are some biblical truths on choosing happiness and joy.
1. Choose Joy Regardless of Circumstances: "Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it
again—rejoice!" Philippians 4:4 (NLT) The Apostle Paul wrote these words while imprisoned. His joy
was not dependent on comfort but on his relationship with Christ.
2. Choose Gratitude "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to
Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT) Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what God has
already given us.
3. Guard Your Mind "Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely,
and admirable." Philippians 4:8 (NLT) Our outlook is influenced by what we allow our minds to dwell on.
4. Trust God with Your Worries "Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you." 1
Peter 5:7 (NLT) Our peace will grow when we surrender our anxieties to the Lord. Remember, temporary
trials are easier to endure when we focus on God's big picture.
This doesn't mean pretending pain doesn't exist. Christians grieve, struggle, and face disappointment. Yet
they can also experience the deep joy of knowing that God is present, faithful, and at work even in
difficult times. Choosing joy ultimately means trusting God's character, believing His promises, and
walking by faith rather than by circumstances. When we do, we discover that lasting joy is not found in
the events we experience but in our faithfulness to God.
