Don’t Worry Be Happy
If you’re close to my age, you probably singing that little tune right now.
The Bible gives clear direction on worrying. In Matthew chapter 6 the scripture says “do
not worry about what you will eat, drink, or wear these things dominate the thoughts of
unbelievers, but your heavily father already knows all your needs. Seek the kingdom of
God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
And I like the way chapter 6 concludes and verse 34 so don’t worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
We always talk about not worrying about the things of tomorrow. Jesus mentions how
he takes care of the birds, the beauty of the flowers and how much more than either of
those is his love for us. But what do we do about “Today’s trouble is enough for today?”
Here are some on-line findings.
Excessive worrying can lead to physical illness, high anxiety, and impaired daily
functioning. Studies show that up to 90% of what people worry about never
happens, indicating that chronic worrying is often unproductive and can negatively
impact mental health.
The number one mental health condition in America affecting over 40 million people
is anxiety. There are also statistics showing that more than half of our young people
battle anxiety on a regular basis.
I was thinking of scriptures that would help with this and Proverbs 3:5-6 came to my
mind. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart lean, not on your own understanding in
all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.”
Without question the answer lies in trusting in Jesus Christ. So, the next time you
start to worry, call upon the name of the one who sets the captives free.
Blessings my friends. I hope to see you Sunday.
